Member for Bass, Brian Paynter MP, in his capacity as School Council President of Pakenham Secondary College, contacted the Principal of Xavier College, Dr Chris Hayes to discuss a Xavier student’s comment about Pakenham Secondary College.
It was reported the student was ‘eternally grateful’ his parent’s didn’t send him to a ‘poverty stricken s***thole in Pakenham’.
Both Mr Paynter and Dr Hayes agreed that the slur was not in line with the values of the Xavier College community or reflective of general community attitudes.
Quotes attributable to Brian Paynter, Member for Bass
Pakenham Secondary College has worked very hard on building a strong and resilient school culture where students, parents and teachers have a sense of pride in the school.
As a past student and current School Council President of Pakenham Secondary College, I don’t believe the comment will change the positive feel around our school.
It’s VCE time and the students are doing their best. It’s best everyone focus on creating a supportive environment rather than focus on a comment placed on social media.
Quotes attributable to Xavier College Principal, Dr Chris Hayes
It is with deep regret that Pakenham was singled out by one of our students in a post placed on social media. As I mentioned in my conversation with Brian Paynter, the derogatory language and sentiments within the post are highly offensive and go against all that we stand for at our school. The student concerned has offered an unreserved apology online and is very sorry for his actions and I, on behalf of Xavier College, apologise for his slur against the Pakenham Secondary College.
